Students got a glimpse about a day in the life as a teacher by visiting the Wyoming Intermediate during their sixth hour Educators Rising class
It’s hard to see teenagers nowadays socializing with younger age groups, yet, these teens do it well. Wyoming High School started a program years ago called Educators Rising. Juniors and seniors are able to take a step into teachers’ lives and educate themselves on adulthood. They also learn how to lead a classroom responsibly.
This class is mostly taken by those who intend to pursue a teacher career in their future. Public presentations, leadership, responsibility, and individuality, are required in this class. This class, unlike others, doesn’t have assigned tests due to big projects that students are forced to take on.
As a student in the class, I view this class as a necessity for future teachers. Many people don’t understand the amount of impact this class has. Before Educators Rising, I was reserved, uneducated on ‘parenting’ like situations, and the amount of energy a career like this may use. Now, I am more confident in presenting in front of not only classmates, but teachers and other adults.
Leo Ortiz mentions that he is in Educators Rising because freshman and sophomore year, he found that teaching is something he really wants to do. “It’s not that I think it is cool, it’s because I love seeing people learn and watching people grow”. He says how when joining Educators Rising, his initial thought was that we were just going to be learning small things, but now he says that we actually do presentations and get to see through a teacher’s lens. “We get to explain our teaching ways and learn how other people teach,” he said. “It’s really getting my foot in the door of what college is going to look like”
“It’s fun because we get to teach many grade levels and many ages. I think that is why it’s so important,” Leo said. He feels that 5th and 6th graders are in the same mature mindset as high schoolers. “Overall, it was pretty good. I got to see how teachers involve themselves in teaching and how to get their students to work and how they learn to adapt to actions,” he said. “I assumed that the classes would act out of line, but the teachers knew how to teach them, and get them back into line when they weren’t.
The Educators Rising class is a wonderful way for teens to step into the lives of not only adulthood, but having a career as well. If you haven’t taken this class before and you dream of being a teacher, this class is for you!
