Despite the Super Bowl being the biggest game of the year, watched by hundreds of millions worldwide, it was somewhat lackluster.
Everything outside the game was fine, the halftime performance was great, and the commercials were neat. However, the part that made it feel so underwhelming was the actual game.
A main reason for this is that the Patriots were simply outmatched. This Seattle Seahawks team is stacked from top to bottom, and it felt inevitable that they were going to win the game going into it. It almost feels like the New England Patriots never had a shot in the first place.
The Patriots never had a chance because until the 4th quarter, their offense just could not get going. This is mainly because of the Seahawks’ famed stonewall defense.
With players such as Nick Emmanwori and Devon Witherspoon, the Seahawks were solid in the pass and the run game as Emmanwori was able to not only play exceptional in the passing game, but also come down as an outside linebacker to fill running lanes in. Along with this, the Seahawks defensive line was destroying the Patriots offensive line.
The Patriots offensive line mainly struggled on the left side with rookie guard Jared Wilson and tackle Will Campbell. Both of these rookies let up way too many hits onto MVP finalist quarterback Drake “Drake Maye” Maye who was sacked 6 times and pressured on a majority of drop backs.
The Super Bowl MVP was former MSU great Kenneth Walker III, who recorded 137 rushing yards off of 27 carries. Though not scoring a touchdown, he was one of the few players who had a real impact on either offense all game. This is the first time a running back has won Super Bowl MVP in 29 years.
Jason Myers broke a record with the amount of field goals he kicked, with 5 field goals being the highest ever. No touchdown was recorded in this game until the 4th quarter for either team. This demonstrates how boring the game was because a kicker almost won Super Bowl MVP
This year’s Super Bowl game was underwhelming, but the halftime performance was great, highlighting unity in the Americas. With all this happening, I feel that it actually won’t help grow the sport all too well, mainly because a boring game will not influence people to keep watching.
