Coach Perkey’s primary goal for this season was winning. “We really want to win a district championship,” he stated. “We continue to get better and better every day.”
He emphasized that the team is more important than the individual. The girls get better and better at defense every single game. “The girls have been doing really well with defense and then just cleaning things up on offense,” said Perkey. “We’re a lot more confident in our ability.”
Coach Perkey also thinks the season has been successful, even outside of winning.
“I would say a successful season for this team. Looks a lot like gaining confidence,” the coach stated. The girls improve on their skills, making sure that they are taking care of things in the classroom, and being great people. At games, they cheer on their teammates. Perkey wants his team to know the only thing that matters is that they are trying to actively move towards a goal of winning.
Coach Perkey agreed that the biggest challenge this season was starting out. A lot of the girls struggled with not playing for a while, and how to get over it. Defining roles was really important, and to a lot of the girls it wasn’t even necessarily the coaches always having to step up. The team has some really good leaders from a teammate standpoint. A couple of the girls that are known leaders stepped up this season. “We are not like last year, we are going to be better than last year,” stated Ceionah Credit. “We are not going to get upset if we can’t play.”
The team has some great athletic guards on the team, especially getting up and down the court. Just changing the game so that they are always running has made a huge difference. Putting pressure on the other team to show them that they have been putting in some work and showing the other teams that we are going to win has also had an effect.
Everyone has shown up, played hard, and what’s been really cool about it is that from a practice standpoint, a lot of the girls are starting to step up and hold each other more accountable compared to just Coach Hose and Coach Perkey being the ones that are yelling.
One of the biggest struggles of the last season did not carry over from last season. The team struggled immensely with zone defenses and has grown a lot in this aspect since last year. The coaches are very impressed with how this team has been encouraging each other, and hope that this can carry into the next season.
