Wyoming soccer ended the season with a strong showing in the district tournament, ending in a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Rockford.
The team had a decent season with a record of 8-5-4. However, the last couple of weeks of the season were rough. Despite the 3-game losing streak, their 2-game win streak going into the district tournament made the players believe that they are still a good team. And they had a solid showing, making it all the way to the district semi-final game, losing to Rockford 2-1.
Going into the tournament games, right-back position holder Dari Ochoa stated, “I think our soccer team is really good and our record shows that.”
This season was similar to last year, as Wyoming went 10-5-4 last year. On October 8 the Wolves defeated a tough Caledonia team in overtime for their first district tournament win. It was a huge win for the team.
Some of the players controversially claim that they are one of the better teams that Wyoming has had compared to other years.
“We are better than some other years when you look at the players we have,” junior Dari Ochoa stated.
System-wise, the players say that it works well and is the best for them to show off their talent as a team.
“We pass a lot because it is our biggest tactical strength. Other teams just kick it far up the field,” Dari explained.
The players always strive to improve and work hard to do so. Practice is core to their success as a team.
“In practice, it’s either we make up plays or we play them out,” Dari said. “We usually do passing drills, since passing is our strong suit.”
The players believe that Wyoming is different from other teams, mostly because of their size.
“Since we have a smaller team, we would rather play on the floor and pass around teams instead of playing in the air,” Dari said.
For this team, growth is the number one objective. And Wyoming High School believes in them.
