28th street, the local roadway that houses hundreds of businesses, has seen many changes over the years. Some stores have gotten replaced, while some classics remain community staples today. For those who may be newcomers to the bustling area, here are some changes, things to know, and interesting fun facts that you may not have known about 28th street.
Local CVS closed!
As a tragic result of a signed deal, our local CVS Pharmacy has closed down with rather rippling effects upon the community. Many are saddened about the loss of the Pharmacy outlet, as many used the building to receive their prescription needs. The reason this has happened is a result of the CVS mass closes that have happened in the past year. The official reason given by the company is that they want to focus on saving the company budget in the hopes to deliver at least $2 billion in company savings. Approximately a total of 271 stores will be shut down by the end of the year, with at least 39 having closed down already this year, with no sign of stopping anytime soon.
There’s a Popeyes now!?
About 4–5 months ago, a Popeyes was installed on 28th where there used to be a Tim Hortons. This has been rather popular with the locals, as almost every time I drive by there, the drive thru is always packed. This is now the closest Popeyes to the Wyoming High School, as the second closest is all the way on 55th street. The placement of the building is certainly interesting, as it was placed directly next to a KFC? The most likely reason is for business competition reasons. This has been a much-needed addition to 28th street, as it was one of the few fast food joints that we didn’t have previously.
Making bridges
One of the grandest new additions to the area this past year has been the bridge that was installed up by Burger King. The bridge is one that is installed right in the middle of 28th street, as it serves as a sort of “Halfway point” for the large suburban area. The theory going around is that it was created to hopefully prevent jaywalkers in the street. 28th is especially unsafe because it has at least 5 lanes that are running concurrently with the road. The bridge has become a frequently used item since it was built.
Did you Know?
Interesting fun fact, did you know that there used to be a comic book store right here on 28th Street? While its run was ultimately short-lived, “The Collector’s Resource: Comics and Games” was a comic bookshop that was around the corner of Bryan center, next to the local Gerrit’s. The store started up in 2017 and went up for lease around 2019. The alleged reason as to why it was shut down is because they weren’t keeping up with anything that was subscription based. The store was being used as more of a collectables shop that had a handful of old comics than a hotspot for upcoming releases. Currently, the business has been closed for about over 6 years and has no sign of coming back.
Marge’s Donut Den: 50 years strong
Marge’s Donut Den started up all the way back in 1975 and offers a variety of donuts, cakes, and cookies of different flavors. Since the store’s inception, it’s become an absolute staple of 28th street and the city of Wyoming as a whole. The store also recently hit its 50th anniversary, which is huge for a small business. With 50 solid years under its belt, it seems like there’s still much more to come in the years ahead for this business.
