The National Cherry Blossom Festival is coming soon here in 2026. The Festival will be taking place in Washington, D.C., from March 20th to April 12th.
Currently, the purpose of the festival right now is for multiple occasions: The arrival of spring, the 250th anniversary of the United States independence and gift of the Cherry blossom trees from Japan. The festival helps promotes the cultural exchange between the U.S. with over 350,000 Cherry Blossom trees also known as “Yoshino Cherry Trees” were sent to the U.S. starting from 1927 to this day.
The Cherry Blossom trees are a symbol of enduring friendship, peace, and goodwill between both nations. The idea was proposed by individuals like chemist Dr. Jokichi Takamine, aiming to help strengthen diplomatic ties and foster positive relations. Despite the interruption of during WW2, the trees have continued to blossom, rekindling the long-term friendship.
The festival includes cultural activities and performances such as walking under the trees, musical performances, and traditional Japanese dance performances such as Onikenbai which is a sword dance. There are also local street festivals that serve traditional foods such as mochi, bento boxes, dango (sweet dumplings), sake, tea and sakura-themed treats from street vendors. Activities include hands-on arts and crafts, fireworks and a large parade that runs along Constitution Avenue.
