I watched I Know What You Did Last Summer and was not impressed.
The movie starts with 5 friends, Ava Brucks (Chase Sui Wonder), Danica Richards (Madelyn Cline), Milo Griffin (Jonah Hauer-King), Teddy Spencer (Tyriq Withers), Stevie Ward (Sarah Pidgeon).
The movie was way too dumb half of the time. The teenage friend group was the kind of typical stuff you’d see in movies back then, all of the underage drinking and characters being complete jocks or idiots, which pretty much sets the movie’s plot by them accidentally getting someone killed due to one of the guys’ stupidity by being on the road.
The movie also has those unserious moments where the characters will see danger or something that’s scary and joke about it heavily, which ends up leading to their deaths. Another thing is how when they’re trapped, there’s like windows which aren’t blocked and with a lot of metal or heavy materials in the building they could break the window with. But apparently the doors being locked also makes the windows inaccessible as an escape plan for two of the characters.
Another critique I have is how loud the sound effects in the movie are. It’s not the screams that are loud or just noises of metal, it’s even the background music or stingers that just do not need to be that loud. The jumpscares too are also heavily predictable as it’s possible to basically feel it before it even happens on screen especially when the camera is looking at a very dark fog or just have the camera next to the characters which allows us to know the killer is gonna come from behind. Everything in this movie is mostly predictable like a person leaves for a minute while leaving another person alone, comes back, the person they left alone is dead, and that scenario repeats itself at least five times in the movie. The characters begin to suspect someone of being the killer with evidence shown but then turns out the person they thought ends up dying. Something that at least was interesting was that it has high quality production and pretty real looking effects, other than that, there’s not really anything else that makes the movie worth watching since it just completely makes no sense now.
The actors aren’t entirely famous ones but are known enough, they even brought back 2 of the actors from the first movie which wasis supposed to make it a lot cooler, if people in 1997 or 1998 had actually watched the first movie since it didn’t even do well. This movie scored a 5.1 on IMDB and 33% on Rotten Tomatoes and the second movie had an even lower score of 4.9 on IMDb and 10% on rotten tomatoes. Although one of the survivors from the first movie turned out to be the killer, or second because one of the girls in the group, Stevie, was shown to be the killer on the boat in the end. And even then, she was thrown overboard with the help of the first character from the first movie with the main character, apparently, the girl somehow knew the guy from the first movie was the killer the whole time or at least suspected it was. I don’t even think they ever said if either one of them was the killer the whole time it was just completely random, mostly no reason as to why but they just wanted to kill their ex wife which made no sense as to why they would have to kill another group of teenagers, if that even was the actual killer because there were two.
