Three Reactions to The Sin: Vanish by Enhypen
The popular kpop group Enhypen has finally dropped their 6th full album titled, The Sin:Vanish. The album sparked many different opinions among the kpop community and their fan base (Engenes), many who listen to Enhypen regularly or on occasions were having many different feelings among the album and its meaning behind the album.
The album includes 11 different songs titled, 사건의 발단 (The Beginning Of The Incident.), No Way Back (feat. So!yoON!), 도망자들 (Fugitives) , Knife, Stealer, 우리가 찾던 목소리 (The Voices We Were Looking For), 목격자 (Witness), Big Girls Don’t Cry, Lost Island, Sleep Tight, and 사건의 너머 (Beyond The Incident.) The tracks in Korean are what sparked bad opinions on the album because they’re just talking tracks, for example in the first track on the album 사건의 발단 (The Beginning Of The Incident) the track starts with “운명은 때론 우리로 하여금
돌이킬 수 없이 위험한 길을 걷게 합니다 이야기는 어느 밤, 홀연히 사라진 한 연인으로부터 시작됩니다” (Fate sometimes forces us to walk a dangerous path, one that seems irreversible. The story begins one night with a lover who suddenly disappears.) This sparked many varying opinions throughout the community and fan base because they wanted more music, but the album is telling a story which fans didn’t really like.
“I think the album in my opinion is very very good, one of my favorite Enhyphen albums. Now, I might be a little biased because it’s a newer release and there hasn’t been a lot of time to listen to the songs at all. I feel like I have the same opinions for the Desire Unleashed album like, ‘OMG I love all the songs, like, they’re all so good’ and time went on I kind of fell out of the songs. Right now I like all of the songs on the album. I find it kind of interesting that half of the album is like those weird talking bits because it probably fits into their lore, but other than those I think that all of the songs are great. I think it’s interesting how all the signs are very different vibes from each other, like, the title track “Knife” is a very, like, different sound wise from like one of the B side tracks like “Lost Island” which is one of my favorite tracks from the album. I just like how diverse their songs can be, I really like the title track “Knife”. It’s pretty similar to the songs I listen to too, it reminds me of FaSHioN by Cortis. A lot of people like that song. I really like that song. There are a couple songs that took me a while to warm up too like Big Girls Don’t Cry, I remembered hearing the teaser snippet of it and I was like ‘Oh…’ I like how it sounds but I don’t like the lyrics. I feel like they’re a little cringy but like it just took me a couple listens to get used to it but I like it, it’s not one of my favorite tracks but it’s not unlistenable if you know what I mean.” – Aubrey from kpop cover group Hoodiez
Other members of Hoodiez opinions aren’t so positive.
“I’m going to give my opinion on each individual song even though most of it was just talking. Starting off with the song No Way Back (feat. So!yoON!). This song is a starter. It’s not bad but it’s not good like it’s just fine. I rate it a 5.7/10. Next song is Knife: it’s not bad, I think I need to listen to the song a few more times but its just very repetitive but not in a good way, like FaSHioN is a good example of a repetitive song that’s good, here its not giving that its just saying Knife over and over. I’m not…no. 5.2/10. I think it just needs a few more listens. My overall rating is a 6.7 or 7.2/10 because there’s some bangers.” – Chara from Hoodiez kpop dance cover group.
Chara has her honest opinions on each song and she did gas up the album a lot just after release, but she thinks they could have put way more work into it to make it better. She thought the album was going to be amazing, but it is too underwhelming for it to be one of her favorites. People from our school also listen to Enhypen and have really good opinions about it. I love this album and the group. It is personally my favorite album that Enhypen has produced. This album in my personal opinion is a 9.2/10: they could have added more music rather than talking, but the talking shows a story and it’s a cool addition to the album.
“The Sin: Vanish is a very experimental sound for them which is why some aren’t as into it as others may be with genres of R&B , Hip hop, club, trap and classic pop. The title track and most popular song “Knife” focuses on a fierce and edgy sound with lyrics like referring to them “Dancing on the knife” which fits in the groups concept of vampires where the 7 members ( Heeseung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, Jungwon, & Ni-ki) are portrayed as vampires in their lore. The song features lyrics which represent an escape with, of course, some love tied into it. Overall, The Sin: Vanish continues Enhypens vampire concept with their signature dark story telling” – Lula Van Randen from Whs
