Teacher, multitasker, superwoman?! Ms. Lawson carries a busy day on her shoulders everyday, yet never gives up.
Unlike most teachers, Ms. Lawson has a lot more to the clean up process than some may think. Due to teaching art, it tends to be very messy. Materials that are being misplaced, spills, and just over all clutter. Lawson considers the clean up process to be the biggest challenge as a teacher.
“I’m thinking about cleaning procedures and that adds a whole new layer to the teaching experience.” said Lawson.
There are many pros and cons of being a teacher here at Wyoming High School according to Lawson. The amount of diversity is the highlight of our school, and despite differences, student still are able to collaborate, talk, and connect. Lawson sees this all over the school, but loves it most in her own classroom. “It’s really great to see connections being built in my room,” said Lawson.
One con that Ms. Lawson has run into is the lack of space she is given to display student artwork. “I love having the walls, but I do wish we had more things to show work scattered throughout the school instead of just in front of the art room,” she states. Lawson also worries that a lot of students don’t even come down to the artwork display area, so having some more showcasing of the many talents of students here at Wyoming High School would be amazing.
Sometimes things don’t always go as planned, even Ms. Lawson’s teaching career. “I initially wanted to be an English teacher.” Lawson admitted.
Lawson also explained how although she loves teaching the criterias that she does, she wishes they were able to teach wheel throwing. “I wish I could teach wheel throwing!” Lawson exclaimed. “That would be a dream.”
As we can see, Ms. Lawson is an amazing teacher and multitaker. But what makes her even more SUPER, is the fact that she has a very mature and calm way of handling conflict. Lawson often mentions how it’s better to handle situations away from the rest of the class, and keep things calm while doing it. “I also want to make sure the rest of the class is having a good experience.” said Lawson.
She shows her super woman characteristics but keeps the kid motivated and more willing to ask questions freely. One way she does this is by understanding how students are sometimes embarrassed and afraid to ask questions publicly. She eventually came up with a system of keeping things on the down low. “I have kids leave space on paper to write down questions so as I walk by, I am able to read them,.” Lawson said.
Superwoman is here at Wyoming High School and has no plan on leaving anytime soon!
