We only have a few more weeks till us seniors graduate. We finally get to go to college or live our lives the way we want to. But we definitely went through a lot to get to this point and there are definitely some things in High School I wish I did more of. So if you are reading this and are in middle school and / or going to be in high school next year then here’s some great advice from a fellow senior.
One thing we forget when we start out high school is how important our GPA is. Freshman year is a great time to figure out your studies and what works best for you to learn your criteria. Like taking notes, using flashcards, organizing your folders, etc.
Besides your learning, it’s great to put yourself out there and meet new people. A great way to do this is to join a club or some sort of activity. There are a lot of different things at school that you could try out and enjoy.
I was in the dance team for about 2 years and it was probably the best part of highschool for me. It was fun and I met many great people from it. So if there’s something that you are interested in and want to be more involved with what you like then clubs could definitely be for you.
But if you are an introvert and afraid to put yourself out there, then I’m telling you as an introvert myself that it’s best to break down that wall and push yourself to put yourself out there because living in a box your whole life won’t get you anywhere. Meeting others and connecting with people that have similar interests as me is the best thing I could have ever done.
DON’T BE AFRAID!
FEAR DOESN’T EXIST!
Something I would also start doing right away is to figure out your plan on what you want to do in college and / or after high school. Of course don’t rush that process because you have 4 years to figure it out. But it’s best to start thinking about it now then when you start stressing out on your senior year not knowing what to do.
Another big thing I think is quite important is to not focus on drama with other people. I feel like this is quite explanatory, but why waste your time and High School experience on others you don’t even like? You’re not going to see 90% of these people after you graduate. So why bother?
But hanging out with your friends is a great thing to do, like going to basketball and football games would be fun to do. It’s an opportunity to make new friends and just make good memories with others which is a part of what makes high school a good experience.
But don’t just focus on making memories and hanging out. It’s important to balance your school life with your personal life. If you have homework that needs to get done then do that first and then go out and hangout with others so you’re not stressed out later on.
ALso this a personal opinion but I’ve had my fair share of focusing a lot on dating problems and crushes which can get quite distracting. So personally I wouldn’t want to always focus and absorb my whole life on one person and throw my future out the window for that one random person you’re in a relationship with. But if you are able to be in a relationship and also focus on your studies and career then that’s great! But I’m just going off of what I know is best from personal experience.
Something I also think students should rely more on is understanding what they’re learning rather than just giving up when they don’t know or understand what’s going on in class. So tutoring is definitely a great option to get that extra help and practice, especially for math and science.
Especially when you become a junior and have to take the SAT. Also SAT isn’t as scary as you think it is. Just make sure you are prepared and do the best you can. You are able to retake twice for free if you want to, but after that you have to pay to retake the test. But after you take the test and go into your senior year, everything just becomes instantly easier and is less stressful overall.
But as a whole I hope the advice that I have given you has at least given you some perspective on what high school might look like for you and what you want to do with your future.
Life will only get better if you allow it to.
