So many people have come and gone through our building but for the first time in a while, this building, Wyoming High School, has seen more than six new teachers at the beginning of the year. One of those teacher’s is Mrs. Kayla Cordell, the new band director who previously was a director at Cornerstone University, Sparta High School, and East Grand Rapids High School.
Mrs. Cordell is not a new teacher at all. “So I have been teaching, this is my 18th year, and I started piano when I was in 1st grade,” Cordell said.
She had finally decided that she wanted to go back to teaching full time. After a successful concert, she knew it was the right move. Feeling a part of the community is important to her and her family, and we here at Wyoming are doing just that.
“I recognized it right away, “ she said. My husband and I really enjoyed feeling part of the Sparta family and after the concert he was feeling that again”.
Speaking of family, Cordell is no stranger to family and making sure they are seen in public: “I think it’s important that, as a working parent, my family is visible just to show all of you that you want to work and have a family,” Ms. Cordell said.
As well as family, she also cares about other activities. “I also love traveling,” Cordell said. “I’ve been to 13 other countries at least, but I’m an adventur[ous] person.”
Making sure she keeps up with her family and with her hobbies is what makes Cordell, well, Cordell.
Cordell plans to stay in Wyoming for the foreseeable future and is happy to do so. “Right now I am looking forward to getting into [the] concert season and that format,” Cordell stated. “I’m hoping that things work out and I can get me in band more, because I would like to really help run this program. How can I boost numbers, how can we get this post covid come back?”
Whatever the outcome of her time at Wyoming, I hope, and so do many others, that she accomplishes what she came here for and feels a part of the community.
