Ever wonder what the school’s listening to? After roaming the halls and interviewing anybody who would spare their time, I’ve come up with the top artists from each grade (including a couple curveballs from some of your fellow classmates as well). Without further ado, let’s get into the results.
Starting with the freshman, the top artist was none other than the Champagne Papi himself, Drake, with two votes. This was no surprise, as his new album “For All The Dogs” was a massive hit. “He’s just good,” freshman Aliyah Garcia said. “I like his music.” Another freshman, Dari Cruz-Ochoa, agreed, simply saying “I like his music”. There were not many freshmen who voted, clocking in at a grand total of 13 total votes. Other notable artists from the freshmen include 2Pac, Bruno Mars, SZA, and surprisingly the Backstreet Boys. Shoutout to Kamar Merriweather and Emily Duran for picking 2Pac and the Backstreet Boys, as I was not expecting some older artists from the newer generation.
Next in line is the sophomores, who, out of the 19 total sophomores, had a surprising two vote tie with Drake and Lucki. Sophomore Damien Cervantez said he enjoys Drake due to his versatility, while Anessa Perez also simply stated “I just like his music”. Of course, given Drake’s history, you don’t need to have a lengthy reason to enjoy him; he’s Drizzy Drake, after all. However, those who said Lucki had far more to say. “He’s just a lyrical genius,” sophomore Christian Diaz-Cano said. “His beats are crazy too.” Loggan Struck agreed, saying “He’s lyrically one of the best out there, and he grew on me ever since”. With the surprise upset of Drake and Lucki, it makes me wonder just how good Lucki actually is, because if he’s rivaling Drake, there’s clearly some serious talent there that’s gotta be talked about. Runner-ups include NBA Youngboy, Tyler, the Creator, and Xkully. A personal shout out to Devan Henbges, who wanted to make sure everyone knows his love for Taylor Swift, and Hilario Martinez, who wanted everyone to know his love for Autumn. If you want his opinion, go find him on Instagram, @hilario_heishim. I thank both of them for making the process more exciting.
Next up is the juniors, who, get this, also picked Drake with two votes. Comments on Drake include junior Millie Gutierrez, who said she’s “been listening to him for a long time”, and Korbin Bauman, who simply called Drake “inspirational”. Given that he’s almost completely wiped the board so far, he clearly must be. The juniors definitely didn’t disappoint with their hot takes however, as they had some good range with artists spanning from Doja Cat, Morgan Waller, and Olivia Rodrigo. With the 17 I could interview, I definitely got some good picks out of them. Shoutout to Ronin Rodriguez and Bradley Jones for picking Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West respectively, as they just don’t miss.
Lastly, we have the senior class, of which I managed to get 40 total votes. Another upset occurred, with a three vote tie between the recurring Drake and the hot take that got the seniors arguing, J. Cole. “Drake is just a vibe,” senior Jaime Bautista said. “You can listen to him at any time, happy, sad, or mad, and just vibe.” The other votes from Fahed Ghani and Neil Connor, despite not being together during the interview, both agreed he’s just different. It’s no joke either, from Passionfruit to recent #1 hit with J. Cole himself, he’s clearly got some range. On the other side of things, senior Luis Duran said J. Cole just has a “way he expresses himself through music”. Seniors Franck Awator and Edwin Lima also agree, with Franck saying “he’s the best rapper in the game”, and Edwin saying “he’s just the goat”. Although they spark some debates, especially with Alejandro Ortiz, number one Yeat fan (who was one of the runner-ups with two votes) who claims Yeat is the best, saying “he’s a unique rapper”. The final runner-up was NBA Youngboy, with two votes that each claimed he was the goat as well. The senior class definitely has some heated, varied takes, and to properly respect that, a shoutout to Javier Vargas and Cesar Hernandez, with Javier being an avid enjoyer of Bad Bunny (for a reason I can’t state here), and Cesar enjoying the musical stylings of up-and-coming goat, Yuno Miles.
And that’s it! In total, Drake won the school by storm with nine total votes, coming in first place as one-tenth of all votes. In second place, NBA Youngboy, with six votes, and in third, J. Cole. I appreciate everyone who participated in the survey, as without you, we wouldn’t know what Wyoming’s listening to. If you want to share your top picks with me, feel free to email me at [email protected], and if I get more votes, I’ll make sure to recognize them. Thank you for participating.
