Sure, there’s a ton of great shows out there but in my opinion nothing beats The Boondocks by Aaron McGruder.
The Boondocks is a show that takes place in the late 1990s-2000s, the main characters being Robert Freeman AKA Granddad, Riley Freeman and Huey Freeman. There’s also some side characters like Uncle Ruckus and their neighbor Tom who both often appear in episodes. Most episodes are based on real life scenarios which is what makes the show so funny.
One example of the makers basing the show off of real life scenarios, is season 3 episode 6, “Smoking with Cigarettes”. This episode was actually based off of a kid who went viral named Latarian Milton who ended up on the news for stealing his Grandmother’s car and taking it out for a joyride. This episode is great because it was very accurate to the segment.
“I wanna do hoodrat stuff with my friends,” says Lamilton. In this episode, him saying this took us back to the news segment where Latarion says “I want to do it because it’s fun, it’s fun to do bad things.”
Another example of them turning real life scenarios into funny episodes would be season 3 episode 13 “The Fried Chicken Flu”. This episode was based off of a real 2009 promotion between kfc and oprah winfrey, where winfrey offered coupons for free KFC chicken which led to widespread runs on chicken and chaotic scenes at many restaurants across the country. This episode exaggerates the situation a little bit, but to the point where you’re able to get a good laugh at it.
“I can’t wait, I can’t wait, I’m going to get some chicken,” said Riley before he and Granddad saw the line at KFC. It was surprisingly really accurate to the news segment back in 2009, which is what made it so funny.
This show is great, I discovered it while scrolling through Instagram when I was 12 and I’ve been in love with it since. Overall, this show deserves a 10/10. It was way ahead of its time, and the animations were amazing for the year it was made.
