Flashing lights, bright decorations, sweaty bodies crowding together, all attempting (and failing) to yell over the music to talk with their friends: the annual homecoming dance happened on September 13 and students had a blast.
Although some complained about the early date, there was still a massive show up, amassing more than 500 Wyoming students total, along with tons of visitor students.
The theme of the year was the classic ‘Under the Sea’, and the decorations strung up all over the gym reflected that. The walls were blanketed in holographic coverings to mimic the waves, and jellyfish paper lanterns were hung from the ceiling. Most students stuck to the standard navy blue, but others went against the status quo, dressed in more unique colors like bright pink or neon orange. Like most other homecoming activities, Ms. Bunton’s student council planned the event with careful precision and a passion for the school. They even had decided the theme at the end of last year in preparation.
“We had a meeting at the end of (last) year to decide,” student council vice president Sofia Barajas-Gutierrez said. “It took a long voting process, but we had to make sure we knew the theme so we could prepare over the summer.”
Whether the dance was boring or not is always a controversial topic the week after the dance. The general consensus for this year though, was completely mixed. Some general positives of the dance included good music, and fun dancing from the Wolfie mascot. Despite these compliments, a few haters still arose. Critics baselessly claimed that the dance was ‘boring’, but were unable to name an exact reason other than “I don’t know”.
“I thought that it was a lot of fun,” student council spirit chair Brooklynn Issa admitted. “I loved dressing up with my friends and going out together. The dance was kind of the finale of our day, and it was great.”
The whole homecoming season was filled with tons of fun events like the hallway decoration contest, the pep rally, the carnival, and more, but the dance ended the season with a bang. Students now are looking forward to Prom as our next school dance, and the dress shopping has already begun. Wyoming High School has a lot more in store for the rest of the year, so make sure to stay tuned so you don’t miss out on any fun, new events!
