Six months ago, a game called Sonic X Shadow Generations was released on multiple consoles. Recently, I’ve gotten the chance to play this game to see if it was worth the hype.
I can confidently say that this game was worth the hype. I’m even replaying the game as of this article, since it is so replayable. It was a fantastic game and a fun experience. Sonic X Shadow Generations has two different stories in it. One is called Sonic Generations, the other being Shadow Generations. The main characters of the game include Sonic the Hedgehog (Roger Craig Smith), Shadow the Hedgehog (Kirk Thornton), Black Doom (Ben Diskin), Doctor Eggman (Mike Pollock) and Miles Tails Prower/Classic Miles Tails Prower (Colleen O’Shaughnessey). Both involve them going to the White Void where the Time Eater has been trying to erase the past and multiple boss fights. Sonic Generations bosses include Death Egg Robot, Egg Dragoon, Perfect Chaos, Shadow the Hedgehog, Silver the Hedgehog, Metal Sonic, and the Time Eater. Shadow Generations bosses include Biolizard, Metal Overlord, Mephiles The Dark, Devil Doom, and Neo Devil Doom. Sonic Generations is more focused on Modern and Classic Sonic wanting to stop the Time Eater, which eventually leads to a huge boss fight in the end. Shadow Generations is more focused on Black Doom trying to take over Shadow, with Shadow resisting and a huge boss fight in the end.
This game does one of the most important aspects of video games, the gameplay very well. It is extremely good and easy to use and learn.
Classic Sonic levels are at a side point of view, bringing back that Sega Genesis style. The main thing he can do is spindash, to go faster, destroy enemies, or go through things you couldn’t without it. There's also the mechanics of each level that spice things up for Classic Sonic, like a barrel rolling after you, the Fire Tornado, and much more. Modern Sonic levels include a mix of Classic Sonic’s side view and the modern third person view. Modern Sonic has much more abilities than Classic Sonic. Modern Sonic has the dash, to make himself go faster, destroy enemies, and break through structures in front of him. Though, you will run out of dash, until you collect rings or do tricks after going on a colorful ramp. He also has a light speed dash, to get rings super fast that are in a straight line, which will be indicated by a button. He also has this stomp ability, to crush boxes beneath him. He can also use the homing attack, where he can destroy enemies and hit springs. Shadow levels are very exciting. His style is more unique than the Sonic levels. Shadow can freeze time using Chaos Control. Similar to the homing attack, Shadow can teleport over and destroy enemies. He can also dash, like Sonic. He also has abilities from Black Doom, of which there are a lot of them. Shadow has Doom Spears, this automatically locks on targets, can destroy enemies, and unlock passages and doors by hitting a switch. He also has the Doom Blast, this ability is really helpful when getting through areas. This works on certain enemies, specifically the tougher ones to destroy them quickly and efficiently. When using this, you can launch an enemy forward to wherever you aim and you will go to where the enemy is launched. Shadow also has the Doom Surf, his ability is used to cross water, as Shadow cannot swim. The Doom Surf turns on automatically when going into water, so there’s no worries about not getting the Doom Surf in time. There’s also the Doom Morph, the ability lets you go through corrupted areas that would otherwise slow you down. To activate this ability, you have to target and hit a morph ball with Shadow’s version of the homing attack. With this Doom Morph, you can also go up walls. With this ability, you can also swing on morph balls. Finally, there’s the Doom Wing that allows you to fly, but it needs 50 rings and is the last ability you acquire in Shadow Generations.
The boss battles of this game are high quality and very fun to play.
In Sonic Generations, there’s several bosses that use different mechanics to defeat them. Classic Sonic fights both Death Egg Robot and Metal Sonic. These two boss battles are fun and challenging. Once you get the hang of it, the boss battles aren’t that bad. Modern Sonic also fights bosses in Sonic Generations that include Shadow The Hedgehog, Perfect Chaos, Silver The Hedgehog, and Egg Dragoon. The mechanics in these levels are more challenging, as things are more modern and can do more. The final boss battle, where you fight Time Eater, Both Modern and Classic Sonic go super to fight Time Eater. In Shadow Generations, Shadow fights all the bosses. Each boss has their own unique mechanics to make it more challenging than the last boss battle. With the use of the Doom abilities, it makes the boss battles more fun, especially the final boss battle with Devil Doom/Neo Devil Doom where all Doom abilities are used. My favorite boss battle in Sonic Generations has to be Perfect Chaos. It’s really fun to play, including all of its difficulties and challenges to go against. My favorite boss battle in Shadow Generations has to be Mephiles The Dark. For one, I’m a fan of Mephiles The Dark, and for two, the mechanics and challenges add a level of fun into it.
Overall, this is a high quality game that anyone trying to get into Sonic, or is already a Sonic fan should play. The stories of both Sonic and Shadow Generations are great. The mechanics and abilities make levels and battles very interesting for both stories of the game. I would rate this game 5 out of 5 stars. Maybe it isn’t perfect to some people, but it's near perfect to me. Everyone who likes Sonic should get a chance to play this game at least once.
