On April 17th, the seniors at Wyoming High School received their caps and gowns. This is an exciting time because this means it is cap decorating time! But if you are a senior and have no idea where to start on this creative journey, here are some tips and advice to ensure your cap is stunning when you walk across the stage.
Decorating caps is sometimes not as easy as it seems. There are many decisions to consider, like supplies and such. Do you need help deciding what to do? Fear not. As a junior last year, I helped three seniors with their caps, and they all turned out great. Popular ideas for decorating are lyrics, shows/movies, future careers, interests, or anything about empowering yourself. For reference, I am decorating my cap based on a show I’ve liked throughout High School, including symbols/references from it.
But some other seniors I know have different ideas. Senior Layla Robertson said, “I wanna do one of my favorite TV shows or Gudetama the lazy egg, because I think it would be funny.” Another senior, River Velasco, is doing a favorite album cover called “Samidare” from &team. “My idea is to do an album cover with cherry blossoms, then the class of 2025 on the top corner,” he said.
Some craft items you may need: craft paint or paint pens, fake flowers, ribbon, rhinestones, hot glue, and patience. I bought craft materials from my work (Michaels), but you should be able to get them from Meijer or Hobby Lobby if that works for you. Even ask our art teachers if you do not want to spend extra money, and I am sure they will help you out. If you are using paint, you may need to do multiple layers since it is black fabric, and sometimes colors don’t show up as well. But if you need to fill up some space, flowers and lettering are your best bet.
Although this may seem like a daunting task, when you have a completed cap that reflects yourself, you can walk that stage with confidence and then step into your life of adulthood.
