People are dumping ice water on their heads again, but this time, it’s not for ALS awareness. All across social media platforms, teens are nominating each other to raise awareness for the #SpeakYourMIND challenge by dumping ice-cold water on their heads.
The #SpeakYourMIND challenge is run by The Mental Illness Needs Discussion (MIND) club, which originated by Wade Jefferson. He had lost multiple friends to suicide and decided to raise awareness about it by creating a challenge to make talking about mental health a more normalized topic.
Mental health is a prominent talking point at WHS because of its relevance to our students. “It just is really important to raise awareness about being real because people need to take mental health more seriously,” said Anna Franks.
When mental health is good at a school, it not only boosts morale but also engagement with school and peers. Moriah Mental Health states, “Students with positive mental health are more likely to perform well in their studies and participate actively in class.” It can also lower a student’s performance when they’re playing sports or working at their jobs.
Students at Wyoming have begun participating in this trend after they are chosen by their friends. Then, they have to be filmed choosing two or more of their friends and getting ice water dumped on them. This video is then posted onto any social media platform (typically Instagram or TikTok) where they will then tag their nominees. The nominees have 24 hours to do this to themselves and then nominate their own friends.
People are skeptical, however, if this trend will have a lasting impact on the topic of mental health and the people who participated in this. “It’s not going to last, the trend was around a few years ago. Next week, people will have forgotten about it,” Mr. Cornell stated.
While others are still hopeful that this trend will continue and inspire people to donate and raise awareness. “I think the trend will go on,” said Vanessa Gonzalez-Rodriguez. “Even if people are not donating, they are still spreading awareness by participating.”
If you or a loved one is looking for mental health resources or help, call 988 or speak to someone you trust. Even our fellow students are aware that it’s important that you talk to people if you need help. Joseph Awator mentioned, “If somebody needs someone to talk to, they shouldn’t be afraid to talk to someone.” Let’s create a more inclusive and safe atmosphere for our fellow peers.

Hello, I exist.
I go to school here in Wyoming, obviously, but I haven’t for very long. I’m a freshman. But I’ve also kind of been here for a while.
Allow me to explain. I started out going to Parkview Elementary School, and I stayed there until third grade.
In fourth grade, I went to a school called JIA in Jenison. It was weird. Required classes included hand drumming, gymnastics, and yoga. Then when we heard they were swapping their program to three days in school and two days out, my parents realized that wouldn’t work with their schedules, so I had to switch schools.
Then COVID-19 hit. Everyone was at home all the time. I was enrolled at Vanguard Charter Academy until eighth grade. This was where I discovered my passion for band, but not until 6th grade. Then, I came back to Wyoming for high school.
I have four pets, two dogs and two cats, and a little brother, PJ. I had two dogs, a cat, and a guinea pig before, but they’re dead now.
I don’t play any sports right now, but I was in bowling & ultimate frisbee in middle school, and I played soccer and football when I was a younger lad.
I’ll leave you with one fun fact about me. I lost a fight with a mirror at Disney World when I was five.

Choir has played a significant role in my life. It’s been my favorite class since 7th grade. I enjoy singing with my friends and making lasting memories with them. I also love Mrs. Miller. She has been very influential in my development over the past six years. She is the reason I have stayed in choir. Honors choir has been especially enjoyable because it has pushed me to become a better singer and make new friends.
At home, I skip around, singing my favorite musicals. My current favorite shows to sing are Hamilton, Wicked, and Moulin Rouge. These shows are wonderful and I love to annoy my family by singing them. I would trade my firstborn for any ticket to any Broadway Show.
Running has become a hobby of mine that I look forward to. I ran XC for the past two years at the school. I’ll treasure those experiences for the rest of my life. I love to run in the summer and to feel the sun on my skin.
I love to plant things and then forget to water them. I have tried to keep many plants alive, but I can’t. My favorite flower is a Dahlia, and my favorite plant is the Monstera. I would like to plant both of these in my future greenhouse.
One last thing: I hate writing.
