The WHS Honors Choice has sung at events, such as homecoming football games, Alpha Wolf assemblies, Gerald R. Ford Airport, and the Grand Rapids Christkindl Markt.
Honors choir is an auditioned group of students who love to sing and share their voices.
Various choir members joined me in a discussion about choir. Highlights are transcribed below.
WHY ARE YOU IN CHOIR?
Lauren Palma: In fifth grade, I had to choose between going into choir and band, I chose choir and I have been doing it ever since. I love being in choir. It is such a fun and loving environment.
Ava Wierenga: I am in choir because I have a passion for singing and I love hanging out with my
friends in class.
Klaus Eckert: I’m in choir because of my friends and because of the fun environment.
Celestia Betts: I just really enjoy that it is a space where you can create music with other people and also indulge in the arts in that way.
WHAT DOES CHOIR MEAN TO YOU?
Lauren Palma: It’s not just an opportunity to sing but also to create new connections.
Ava Wierenga: I would say that choir is a community where I feel truly safe and loved by everyone.
Klaus Eckert: I think [choir] means being a part of something … that you can rely on. It’s like a community.
Celestia Betts: It’s a great way to create a community with people you like, it’s a nice space.
WHAT HAS CHOIR TAUGHT YOU?
Lauren Palma: It has taught me to work with others and even go out of my comfort zone.
Ava Wierenga: I think choir has taught me that I need to give people more patience than I have before. Learning music takes patience and so does being in a group of people who are all different.
Klaus Eckert: Choir taught me that memoization is key.
WHY SHOULD PEOPLE JOIN CHOIR?
Lauren Palma: After being in classes that are stressful [then transitioning] to being able to sing for an hour is really relaxing.
Ava Wierenga: I think that people should join choir because it is a great way to grow musically and as a person.
Klaus Eckert: People should join choir just for the community because the people are really nice and you can rely on them.
Celestia Betts: Even if you aren’t the best singer or person to be in music, it’s still an amazing place to build community, make friends, and make memories for your high school life.
