Wyoming is known for being diverse. Diversity comes a long way whether it is diversity in athletics, race, religion, culture, or education. Wyoming has more than 8 AP courses for students to take throughout their years here. Whether it be AP Art or AP Lang or Lit, there are always going to be classes catered towards the students.
A newly introduced AP at Wyoming is “AP Computer Science Principles”. The class is run by Mr. Hawks, a Ninth-grade Algebra 1 teacher, and also runs the new junior and senior-catered AP class.
Mr Hawks is passionate about what he does in Wyoming and what he does to help students throughout our high school years. A lot of students come to him day by day saying hi or giving him a fist bump. Mr Hawks is a perfect example of our core values of being kind, compassionate, and gracious. Although he has the option to let us retake tests and make sure we are ready for them, he makes sure each student gets the same opportunities and stays back from lunch, after school, and during his prep hour to help the students that need that extra help.
Mr Hawks isn’t new to the Computer science field. “In high school, I took computer science and in college, I also took computer science and excelled in both.” He said, “I was pushed by a lot of people around me to go into computer science.” Mr hawks is now giving his students what he received, by pushing his students to become the best they can be in the classes he teaches.
Although it is our first year in Wyoming having an AP computer science class, this is not Mr. Hawks’ first rodeo. He said, “When I taught in Maryland I taught both AP computer science principles and computer science A and really enjoyed teaching and working with both. So the opportunity came up to me and I told the AP coordinator Mrs. Varney that I really really wanted to have the class and she gave me the opportunity.”
Mr. Hawks is a great teacher, say hi to him during passing periods. You won’t regret it. You’ll soon have an adult you can trust and confide in.
