Have you ever wondered what it’s like in basketball tryouts and what a coach looks for, from a player?
Basketball is a physical sport and you have to be good at something on the court or be a role player. Most people who play basketball want to make it a career.
Everyone has to start, though, by making their high school team. Coaches are watching for different qualities in a player.
“When watching basketball tryouts I look for guys that can be a leader but can also be coachable.” said Mr. Hose. “Also I look for guys that hustle, dive for the ball and give it their all on every possession of the game.”
Coaches are also analyzing the skill level of players, determining what each might bring to the team. “When we are in a tryout we do things like defense, drill work, shooting, to see who is more advanced than others,” said Mr. Hose. “We also condition a lot before we start to go over things, to see who is in shape and who isn’t.”.
Players need to be accountable on and off the court to represent the basketball team.No one is allowed to tryout if they are failing two classes or more. Also, potential players need to provide coaches with feedback from teachers.
