Is the soccer JV team the soccer dream team? In order for me to figure that out, I ended up interviewing their coach, Mr. Perkey.
How are we doing so far in soccer?
“I believe we are, I’d have to go back and look, I believe 5 wins and 8 losses, we are actually doing better than last year already. We probably lost 2-3 games where we should’ve won.
Why do you think you should’ve won?
”We made a couple of costly errors that cost us to lose. Also, there were several games where we weren’t playing very smart and weren’t playing at our best.”
What do you think we can improve on the team?
”I think that one thing that my team could always get better with is turning with the ball, having a better first touch, and then looking up once we have the ball to try to find options to pass. Those are things we could always get better at.”
Do you think that the soccer team is the most competitive team out of every sport in our school?
”I would say so, I wouldn’t necessarily say they’re the most competitive but I wouldn’t say they are the worst. The guys in general really, really care and they are very passionate, so they usually are playing really hard and very competitive, so I would say yeah.”
What do you like about the team?
“I like the guys and their personalities. They make me laugh everyday, a bunch of goofballs but, what I really liked about this team is that when they know when I get serious. When it’s time for them to get serious, they know that it is time for them to lock in, so they’ve been really good about that”.
What is your goal for the soccer team?
“ Obviously is to win games and just for them to improve and get better, and for them to become better young men. This year I implemented that if they are failing a class they have to go to study hall or they won’t play. Obviously if they are failing two classes they can’t play, but just understanding that school comes first and it is important to be a good person, and also, like I said, get better at soccer, improve their touch”.
Do you like being the coach?
“Yeah, I love being the coach. I love these guys. They work hard, make me laugh every day. I really really enjoy it”
Is there anything else you have to say for the team?
“We got about two and a half weeks left so I hope they bring it because once that’s done were, most of them would be done, we’ll probably have one or two dudes to move up to varsity and they’ll obviously see their chance to play on the varsity team for districts. Overall, I’m happy with the team, we’ve seen improvement with our records”.
Any words of advice for your players?
“Just remember that lots of professional athletes have failed over and over and over again and that is why they have succeeded because they’ve been able to overcome their failures and turn them into learning opportunities to get better.”
