Hey Seniors! Today is decision day, usually, today is a celebratory time as students decide where to commit to college. However, due to many FASFA delays, students are struggling to receive award packages and scholarships.
But here’s a list of things you should worry about when committing to college:
1. The overall cost of tuition and boarding. Sometimes college can get pricey, and it’s important to check the cost by semester. If you are commuting, how much will gas money be? Working on those costs is very important. GRCC’s tuition is around 8,000, and they don’t offer boarding. But make sure, you have money to commute.
2. The college’s room styles, most freshmen in college have to stay on campus, but make sure you enjoy the size and amount of roommates. For example, Michigan State has quad rooms that I would not enjoy staying in so I opted for the suite style with one roommate. Some colleges have rooms of 8. Just make sure you pick a college that has a dorm design you’ll enjoy.
3. Does this college specialize in your major? Even if it doesn’t, It’s always important to check if they specialize in whatever you want to go into. If they don’t a simple Google search can help you find programs in other colleges.
4. Career placement after getting your degree, making sure your college has a high rate of placing students in a lifelong career right out of high school. Central Michigan has a placement rate of 94%. Make sure to check your college’s placement rate and career advisory center.
5. The size of the school also matters, and the size of classrooms. If you are going to a huge public university, you would expect more people in your lectures. Professors are less likely to know your name. In a private college, there might be fewer people and more close connections. For instance, I learn better in classrooms with fewer students so I chose a major that will have close and personal connections. This is something to check out at whatever college you decide to go to!
These are all important things to look out for if you are looking into attending college in the fall, in the end, Just make sure you are happy! This is where you will be spending the next 4 years. But don’t stress! Things always work out.
