The 75th Emmy Awards, for artistic and technical merit for the American and international television industry, were held on January 15, 2024. The Emmy Awards were set to happen in September, but were held in January due to the strike of Hollywood’s actors and writers. Anthony Anderson, known for his role in Black-ish was the host of the Emmys, and seemed to be liked more than Jo Koy, the host of the Golden Globes.
Many shows and actors were nominated for the 75th Emmy Awards, but were beaten by the cast of shows HBO’s Succession and Hulu’s The Bear. The Bear dominated the comedy category with a total of 10 awards, and the main trio won their first ever Emmy’s for the show’s first season. Jeremy Allen White won for Outstanding Lead Actor, Ayo Edebiri won Outstanding Supporting Actress, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach won Outstanding Supporting Actor. The Bear also won awards for writing, directing, casting, picture editing, and sound. Extremely happy for the cast, and I am excited to see them continue winning especially for season two.
Succession swept in the Drama category with wins from Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, and Matthew MacFadyen. Along with wins for directing and writing, which was expected for the very moving episode “Connor’s Wedding” that included a 30-minute scene that was shot in one take. Kieran Culkin delivered such an emotional performance as Roman Roy throughout the show, and I am glad to see him being applauded for it. I loved the show and cast, and it’s sad that this is the last time we’ll see them together after the end of the show.
This year’s Emmys had many memorable moments such as Quinta Brunson winning Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series for Abbott Elementary and is the first black woman to do so in over 40 years. Huge milestone for Quinta with her being both the creator and writer of Abbott Elementary. Christina Applegate made a rare appearance at the Emmys, and received a standing ovation while presenting an award. The Emmys also made slight references to shows, one being Community, in which they played the theme song while Ken Jeong and Joel McHale went up on stage along with a camera cut to Donald Glover who was also in the series.
