After transferring from Traverse City Central High School during winter break, Jack Hogan is ready to make an impact on the Varsity Basketball team and in the classroom.
Jack was born and raised in Traverse City, the cherry capital of the world. Jack “really loves the city,” and still holds onto the memories, even after coming south, to Wyoming, Michigan. Jack stated that he “still has to move some stuff down here,” moving closer to his grandparents. Jack has always played basketball his “whole life” and was excited to continue his athletic career for the Wyoming Varsity Basketball team. Even though he transferred in the middle of the school year, he was the most excited that he “could still play basketball.” He’s always found the sport “fun” and that hasn’t changed. When asked if he’s interested in competing in any other sports, he had ideas about joining the track team in the spring.
Jack has great first impressions of Wyoming High School. He enjoys the “vibe” of the school and how “welcoming and nice” most of the students have been. Jack also enjoys most of his teachers and classes, with Psychology being his favorite.
After watching Jack play in some of his first games with a Wolves jersey on, I think I can say he’s a great passer and “Isn’t afraid of a challenge”, attacking the rim when others might not. It takes a lot of “confidence” and motivation to go to the rim, especially when tall and athletic players are defending it. Jack can draw a foul easily, and that can be seen in most of the games he’s played this year. Every game, Jack always tries to “believe” in himself and his teammates.
Athletes want to be the best on their team, in the area, and nationwide. It’s a tough task to accomplish a feat that large. A lot of young athletes aspire to play like pros such as Lebron James, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, and countless others. But Jack is the opposite: “I just try to be myself. I’m my own person.” Jack is a humble player and person, and it’s being noticed. Jack doesn’t just throw up random shots way beyond the three-point line. He can be a crafty player, looking for an extra pass, and making smart shot decisions. Understanding that everyone is their own person takes a lot of courage, and that’s what makes Jack a humble person and athlete.
One of Jack’s main goals for the basketball team this year is to “find a way that I can contribute to the team, continue working hard.” He doesn’t plan to just focus on this year. He wants to “work hard over the offseason” doing anything he can to lock up a starting position in the lineup his senior year, next year.
Coaches strive to make athletes better as a student and of course, an athlete. With the help of Coach Vanderklay and Coach Warren, Jack was able to pick up the plays pretty quickly: “I like the coaches. We don’t have a lot of plays but they made it easier.” With the help of Coach Vanderklay, Jack can become better everyday.
Jack is excited to continue his basketball career, while being thankful to have a spot on the team. Jack has less than half of his Junior year left, but doesn’t plan to slow down. Welcome to Wyoming High School Jack!
