Have you ever been to the nacho line, or specifically the “Sono” line? It contains a variety of nacho toppings with meats, rice, cheeses, and multiple vegetable toppings. Our high school has a solid variety of lunch meals that are actually pretty tasty. But over the years, the nacho line has changed for the worse. Will the nacho line ever return to normal?
Tyler: In previous years, my go-to choice for lunch had been the cheeseburgers in the “grilled” line. It was quick and simple, and I always knew it would have the same half-decent taste. However as I began to exercise more and started to take weightlifting classes I realized I needed more nutrients, and most importantly more calories. I was also beginning to grow concerned with the long term effects on my health that eating the burgers so often would have. I wanted something new and better, and after seeing one of my friends eating from the nacho line, I knew what I wanted to try.
Wyatt: I’ve never gone to the same lunch line everyday, because I like to change it up. I want variety. Sometimes I’ll get chicken tenders, other times the “create” line, and the sub line. But I only go to the sub line if the bread looks good and the line isn’t all the way to the Wolf Den. Towards the end of last year, and most of this year, I’ve been getting lunch from the nacho line. I realized it was the “healthiest” option. Although I like to switch up what I eat, the nacho line is consistently the “healthiest” option besides the sub line.
Wyatt: Before lunch, on the days I don’t have Middle College class, Tyler and I attend the weightlifting class, in order to put on some muscle. Most days were there, we tried our hardest, making us somewhat tired after the workout session. We have to refuel our energy, and the nacho line offers items that refuel us, but of course, in a “healthier” way. Also, I’ve been trying to focus more on eating healthier, so the nacho line is one of the best options.
Tyler: I wanted the most nutrients available After doing some research I realized that the nachos had the most nutrients compared to the other meal options.
Tyler: The nachos allow for more customization too. If you’re after more protein you can get the brisket and queso blanco (the white cheese), and if you want to lower your sodium intake you can skip the cheese all together and opt for chicken. From there you can add vegetables to complete the meal. This makes for a very filling, tasty lunch.
However, lately the nacho line has taken a turn for the worse. This school year the portion sizes are smaller and extremely inconsistent, and as Brandon Lubberts said, “it’s terrible. There’s not enough meat.” If you get lucky you’ll get a sizable portion, but that’s a rarity. For those who need lots of calories to keep them going throughout the day, it’s disappointing getting such small portions. It often looks more like a salad than nachos. The outcome is quite sad and depressing, with Senior Cesar Hernandez describing it as “slop.” It might not be “slop,” but the nachos can definitely look better overall. Cesar normally gets food from the “create” line, rarely ever getting the nachos.
While this is discouraging, it’s not hopeless. If proper guidelines were set for the nacho line we could get consistent meals every day, which is one less thing students have to worry about during their busy school day. Make the Nacho Line GREAT AGAIN!
