Who is Mr. Nykamp?

RaeLynn Watkins, Contributing Writer

Luke Nykamp, our newest Biology, Chemistry, and Forensic Science teacher lodges in room 14 next to Rathsack in our science hall. Graduating from GVSU, and following in his parents footsteps he became an educator.

Prior to Wyoming Nykamp taught at Forest Hills and Calvin Christian, but said he was drawn to Wyoming because of itś diversity, ¨The most important thing about teaching is connecting with young people¨ he said, is what he enjoys and hopes to do here at Wyo . In Fact, ¨ My biggest fear is getting stuck in traffic, and not making it to school in time” he said, with a chuckle.

Aside from being a teacher, Nykamp is also a husband and a father. He has two daughters Eva (11) and Elyce (9) , and has been married to his wife for 18 years. Currently they live in Rockford, where his kids attend a spanish immersion program and his wife works for the insurance industry.

When he’s not working he’s at home with his family, reading, or being “the griller of the family”. He spends time doing quirky things like having matching halloween costumes with his wife with underlying political messages each year and going to variety of music concerts, from Coldplay to Michael Franti.
(Oh and by the way, he told me he knows all the words Def Leppard’s “Pour some sugar on me”, so I’d totally test that out).
