As you may have noticed, some of the classrooms in the school have been redone with brand new furniture. But why? What’s wrong with the desks?
The new Steelcase furniture is actually a test for the new building. When the high school gets extended within the next few years, all of the classrooms will get this brand new furniture to go along with it.
At the moment, only five teachers have received new furniture in their classrooms. Those teachers are Mr. Mulvihill, Mrs. Bernatowicz, Mr. Kordich, Mrs. O’Dell, and Mr. Doyle. Each of them a different layout of furniture. The idea of the furniture right now is for the students and the teachers demo the different types of furniture.“When we outfit all the new rooms, we’ll have an idea of what we like and more importantly, what we don’t like,” stated Mr. Robrahn.
The setups all offer some degree of freedom and easy customization. This is so the teacher using the furniture can easily move it around to their liking. “I love this setup because it allows for more collaboration,” stated Mr. Doyle. “It allows students to swivel on their chairs so while I’m walking around the room, they can swivel and they’re not stuck in that stiff desk where they can’t swivel or move at all.”
Both students and teachers are able to give feedback. “We did a pre-survey, to collect information on how the students that we have thought that our class functioned with the existing furniture that we had,” said Mr. Kordich. “We’ll do a post-survey after they’ve had a chance to demo and experience the furniture on whether or not they liked the new setup, whether they thought it contributes to better learning in class, and which setups they liked the best.”
From what many of the students are saying so far, they love the new furniture. They say that it’s not only comfortable but they that they also love having the freedom to move around. They love the fact that they have the option to choose what they like and the teachers agree. “What fits for one does not fit for all. Variety is the spice of life, and we’re just trying to give you guys options and give you guys the ability to choose what you guys want to do,” said Mr. Kordich.
