“ Winning is not the point, wanting to win is the point. Not giving up is the point. Never letting up is the point.”

A quote by former University of Tennessee Women’s Basketball Coach Pat Summitt that Coach Sigler emphasized to the football team.

Simon Leale, a senior at Wyoming High School. puts in hard work, striving to become the best he can be.

Leale has always loved football. “Growing up  I watched the NFL when I was younger,” he said. “I was about in the 5th grade when I started playing.”

Starting at a young age gave him an advantage as he was growing up.

The team handles trash talk by keeping their composure. “My best memory of football was when we were in a game against Comstock Park and I was playing defensive end and the pulling guard knocked me  [down] and then he laid on top of me and said “ you [dumb] spic,” he said. “Then, the play after that, he tried to do that to me again, and I hit him to the ground.”

Simon is committed to football, even when he is faced with adversity. “My worst memory of football was when I broke my leg,” he said. “It was my junior year. It was the first day of football camp and Dion Parks tripped and fell on my leg.”

Simon was not able to play his whole Junior year. “ I play defensive end” This means that he quickly tries to get the quarterback across without anything distracting him or getting in the way. “ I used to be a bigger guy and now I am slimmer. I am able to be faster”. This shows how much commitment he has to football  Balancing school and football is actually really easy”.

Simon plans on not playing football once he gets to college. He just wants to focus on getting his education without any distractions.

The younger kids look up to the older teenagers that play football. It seems to be an inspiration to them.“My main motivation for playing football is Wyoming High School and when we have a home game and we are walking out of the locker room and step onto the field the younger kids always gives us high fives,” he said.

“ My teammates are the best, best people I’ve ever met.” I would like to give a shout out to Anthony McCarty, he is the best defensive tackle in the state of Michigan”. Simon ends with saying “Being an athlete makes me a better person by appreciating hard work”.
