Tuesday’s game was a great kickoff to the Girls Varsity Basketball season. They took the win against Union with a final score of 58-42.
During the JV game, varsity girls warm up in the small gym. Six minutes before the game, Coach Mast calls all of the girls into the locker room to lay down the plays for the night. As they ponder through each play, nerves are erratic and they begin to get hyped up.
Coach Mast felt good about his team’s effort. “Both teams got off to a slow start because it was the first game of the year,” he said, “But we finished the first quarter strong.”
The team was very happy to start the season off with a 1-0 record.
The team met the challenge despite missing a key player. “ Kayla Hinton’s injury hurts because she’s a three-year varsity player,” said Coach Mast. But Freshman Taejah Cross with 12 points and Jaden Wade with 6 along with getting lots of boards, gave a big contribution on Tuesday night as they took on their first varsity game.
Senior Menelisia McGee, had a career-high of 27 points to start off her first last home game as a senior.
With the win, Coach Mast feels good about his team moving ahead. “We gotta stay away from injuries, and play as a team we have a chance to be successful,” he said.
